Like much of what happens to you in life, it is your state of mind as much as the physical application to your goals that determine success or failure. The importance of mindset when it comes to exercise cannot be overstated. It all starts with the mind. The mind determines whether you train, how hard you train, how often you train, and for how long you keep training. The mind decides it’s time for a break or finds the strength to keep going. Your fitness goals may transform your body, but it’s in your mind that your ambition is born.

SET YOUR GOAL

What is working out without a goal? Ask yourself what you want to achieve, and set a goal. Whether it’s weight loss, muscle gain, toning, or just general maintenance, focus your workout routine on achieving your goal.

BE REALISTIC

Get motivated, but don’t be too hard on yourself. Be realistic in your expectations. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and you won’t achieve your goal in a day either. Plan to reach your fitness goal in stages or in smaller objectives. Attaining an objective will make you feel good, and motivate you towards the next, all the way to your end goal.

PHONE A FRIEND

You are not alone. There are thousands upon thousands of people out there striving towards their fitness goals. Find support in a friend or colleague who has a similar motivation to you. Studies show that when you work out with a fitness partner, you are better at staying committed to your workout routine. So whether you work out better when you have someone to compete with, or whether you just like the company, having a friend to train with you will always prove beneficial.

FIND A TRAINER

If you’re looking for advice or direction, most gyms have personal trainers to help you. If you are uncertain about what you want to achieve, or even how to physically do so, personal trainers are key to improving your mindset and keeping you focused and motivated. A personal trainer will also give you a tour of the gym, show you how to use all of the equipment safely and efficiently, and may even offer you nutritional advice to help achieve your fitness goal.

NO EXCUSES

Just work out. Don’t make excuses of where you are or what you think you need to work out. You can be in a state-of-the-art gym with all the latest equipment, or you could be at home with your dad’s old barbells. Find the focus and motivation to work out wherever you are. Switch it up – if you can’t get to a gym, go for a run, take the dog for a jog, go for a hike, or do some push up and sit ups. Any form of cardiovascular exercise is great for you.

EAT HEALTHY

Starting to exercise can be hard enough without changing your eating habits as well. But diet and exercise really do go hand-in-hand. Your body needs to eat healthy in order to properly receive the benefits of exercise. You must eat a healthy diet to maintain a good fitness program. If you can afford it, consult a dietician for nutritional advice. If not, ask a personal trainer, ask friends, or scour the Internet for information.

ENJOY YOURSELF

Get addicted to the high of working out. If you’re feeling sluggish, remind yourself how good the burn feels after a workout or how great it feels to sweat it all out. Regular exercise has many health benefits. It helps reduce or control weight, lowers blood pressure and improves cardiovascular function, strengthens muscles and bones, improves mood and fights depression, boosts energy, boosts libido, promotes better sleep, reduces the risk of some cancers, and may even help you live longer too.

The right mindset is what gets you out of bed in the morning. It’s what pushes you harder and farther. It’s what helps you reach your fitness goals. Let’s face it, you’ll never be 100% excited about each workout; sometimes you’ll have to push yourself. The right mindset is what gives you the motivation, the confidence, and the edge to persevere and achieve all that you know are capable of (and maybe a bit more too).
