As a “long in the tooth”, lifelong learner, and a disciple of deliberate practice, I have read and listened to a library of books on exercise science, nutrition, psychology and behaviour change as well as business and change management. The need to read stems from deep seeded insecurity (my background is competitive bodybuilding) or a desire to irritate all by knowing everything. Wherever it comes from it will to help you reach the goals you are looking for.
I left a career in Project Management and Civil Engineering to return to Langara and take Human Performance and exercise science, completing personal trainer certifications in both the ACE and NSCA. I worked at Fitness World in Vancouver and then moved on to owning and operating OneLife Health and Wellness where I have been training and helping people reach their goals for 15 years.
As a science guy, an athlete and an agent of change, I firmly believe that a coach should have some experience in the gym and in the classroom, more importantly they have tried to change something about themselves. Lost weight, gained weight, jumped higher, ran faster, lifted more, something that really teaches the coach the struggle to change.
